A hydraulic press is a forming press, also known as a “press” in general, which works on the principle of application of pressure and is used for changing the primary shape of any workpiece by using a hydraulic cylinder as a key component for generating any required compressive force. It was known as Bramah press since its inception, as it was named after its inventor Joseph Bramah who is from England, and it uses a kind of a mechanical lever.

The hydraulic press is depended on Pascal’s principle where any pressure throughout the entire closed system is constant. A common part of this system is the piston that acts as a pump that applies a modest mechanical force that acts on a small area of the cross-section. Another part of it is a larger piston with a larger area that generates a comparatively large mechanical force. A need for a small-radius tubing that resists pressure more easily becomes mandatory only if the pump and the press cylinder is separated from each other.

The pressure is created on a small piston by the means of a small effort force which in turn creates a specific amount of pressure and that is transferred by the means of the hydraulic fluid for transmitting a greater force on the other piston which is the larger one.

Applications of a hydraulic press

A hydraulic press has a variety of applications and is commonly used for various applications such as:

  • Moulding
  • Clinching
  • Forging
  • Blanking
  • Deep drawing
  • Punching
  • Operations on metal forming

The hydraulic press is considered to be an added hand in the field of manufacturing. It empowers the industry in creating more complex shapes and is highly potential in being more economical with a varied array of materials. A hydraulic press usually consumes lesser space in comparison with the mechanical press of equivalent capability.

There is a variety of industry that utilises the hydraulic press as a part of their production pipeline. Some of the exemplified industries include the automotive industry that uses the hydraulic press for assembling applications. These assembling applications include assembling a couple of or more parts together such as rear axle assemblies, shafts, bearings and gears. Assembling application is too widely used in electronics, medical and military industries. It is one of the main and preliminary components of a hydraulic power pack along with hydraulic cylinder. Applications in compaction include fuel cells, Teflon power for seals, battery compactions and fuse assemblies for military munitions. It is also used in the aerospace industry for deep drawings. The process of deep drawing has uses in manufacturing fan housings, aerospace duct-works, oil cans and fire extinguishers. Additionally, industries of home appliance manufacturing, energy storage and agriculture use customized hydraulic press.
